About the Bunkhouse

In the traditional sense ‘Bunkhouse’ is defined as “A building offering basic sleeping accommodation for workers”. Nowadays bunkhouses are used by people from all walks of life on all sorts of journeys; everyone is welcome at The Joiner’s Shop be it to have a great night with friends or get a good nights rest.

The Joiner’s Shop Bunkhouse is nestled nicely in the wooded hamlet of Preston, at the bottom of the hill secluded from nearby abodes. The building dates back to the 1860s when it was a purpose-built Joiners Shop: eventually the cottage became a family dwelling and in the early 1990s the Workshop was converted into a bunkhouse, and here we have the birth of this magical place!

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text]

The Joiner’s Shop Bunkhouse is very much a traditional, get away from it all, bunkhouse. It is all thrills and no frills! It’s not shiny and modern but rustic, cosy and wholesome. We have everything you need for a comfortable stay: heating throughout, hot showers, 18 sturdy pine bunk beds, full kitchen including oven, fridge and microwave, long kitchen table, living room with plenty of seating and an open fire. There is also plenty of parking and an outdoor area to enjoy the sun or gaze at the open dark skies (you can see thousands of stars on a clear night!)

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner row_type=”row” type=”grid” text_align=”center” css_animation=””][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]

The bunkhouse is now run by Kirsten who took it on in April 2019 from good friends Wal and Annie who lived here for 16 years. There is true beauty in the bunkhouse and in living in the woods at the bottom of the hill, and although there are plans to move things forward there are no plans to take away from the rustic tradition of this gem. We hope you’ll come and experience it for yourself!

The Area

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]From our location map, you can see we are nestled in the hamlet of Preston near the village of Ellingham. The closest attractions are Preston Tower and the Pack Horse Inn, both walkable and enjoyable!

For those who are new to Northumberland, the county is stunning and there is tonnes to do! We are the gold winner of the British Travel Awards in 2018 for a reason. For those who are familiar with our fair county, we’re sure there are still places on the list you would like to visit even if you’ve been to Northumberland a hundred times. Below are some favorites and if you have any suggestions to add we’re all ears.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”85,23,65,21″ img_size=”400×400″ column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” images_space=”gallery_with_space”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner row_type=”row” type=”grid” text_align=”center” css_animation=”” el_class=”list-style-al”][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Walking and Cycling

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”15px”][vc_column_text]There are ample walking routes across the county, some very close to the Joiner’s Shop and some a drive or a cycle away. If you visit the village of Ellingham we recommend picking up a local walking book from The Pack Horse Inn, it is made to raise money for St Maurice’s church in the village (stunning church). Some of our favourite walks are below, just ask us for more recommendations!

Windy Gyle

Although a fair distance to drive this is one of Kirsten’s favourite walks in the Northumbrian hills. It is worth the drive and there is a fair climb, but once at the top of Windy Gyle you have panoramic views, north into Scotland and south down the Penine Way. Truly beautiful!

Climb Cheviot

A little less of a drive from The Joiner’s Shop, and worth the journey. Cheviot is the highest hill in the Northumbrian range and it’s a canny hike to the top! Take a wee packed lunch for the day trip out and a flask of coffee.

Seahouses to Budle Bay

Start on St Aiden’s Beach and walk all the way past the iconic Bamburgh Castle to Budle Bay. Easier when the tide is out and there is plenty of beach to choose from. Easy walk along the coast and Budle Bay is a lovely, usually quiet spot to stop for some lunch and some rays (weather permitting).

Low Newton to Craster

The National Trust has marked out a slightly longer route here, but you can shorten it to only walk along the beach if you wish. Passing Dunstanburgh Castle, another iconic Northumbrian Castle but a ruin this time. Grab some Kippers from Crasters famous smoke house (https://www.kipper.co.uk) and a pint in Low Newton’s rightly famous pub, The Ship Inn (https://www.shipinnnewton.co.uk).

Cycling

The Joiner’s Shop is very conveniently situated on the national cycle route 1 making it the perfect place to get some rest on your journey that could stretch from Newcastle to Berwick. We have plenty of space to store bicycles and can provide breakfast and/or a packed lunch if you would like. Please arrange directly with Kirsten.

Northumberland is also becoming increasingly popular for mountain bikers, especially in the hills and Kielder National Park. Why not book a trip with friends? Get away from the hustle and bustle, chill at the bunkhouse by night and release your inner bikeoholic by day.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”parallax” parallax_content_width=”in_grid” anchor=”prices” text_align=”left” background_image=”22″ full_screen_section_height=”no” el_id=”prices”][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner row_type=”row” type=”grid” text_align=”left” css_animation=”” el_class=”dark”][vc_column_inner width=”1/6″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″ css=”.vc_custom_1559751001859{margin: 20px !important;padding: 20px !important;background-color: rgba(10,10,10,0.65) !important;*background-color: rgb(10,10,10) !important;}”][vc_column_text]

GETTING HERE

Surrounded by tranquil woodland and rolling countryside, the bunkhouse can feel a world away. But it’s actually very easily accessible by road and rail.

BY CAR

The bunkhouse is just off the A1, around seven miles north of Alnwick. Follow the brown historic property signs for Preston Tower.
If you’re travelling from the south, you’ll be turning right. From the north, you’ll be turning left. Obviously.

It’s about 1.5 miles down the road, and to your left. We’ve a sign out front, and you’ll be glad to know there’s ample parking in front of the building.

BY TRAIN

There’s a local station at Chathill which with two daily runs to Newcastle. More frequent trains can be caught to Almouth, which is about 12 miles away.

BY BUS

The area’s main bus station is situated in Alnwick. A local service is provided, including ‘The Coastal Clipper’ for surrounding villages.

BY BICYCLE

Cyclists love it here. We’re situated on the National Cycle Network, on National Route One.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”128″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” qode_css_animation=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”parallax” parallax_content_width=”in_grid” text_align=”left” background_image=”26″ full_screen_section_height=”no” section_height=”350″][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” anchor=”gallery” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” z_index=”” el_id=”gallery” css=”.vc_custom_1560347721750{background-color: #262626 !important;}”][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_row_inner row_type=”row” type=”grid” text_align=”center” css_animation=””][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]
