Hurkle Durkle Hut
NOW OPEN

Hurkle Durkle Hut is a custom built A Frame cabin nestled in the woods in Preston, Northumberland. The hut is a separate accommodation to the Bunkhouse, although of course guests could book both together where available.

Arrival/Departure days are usually  Sunday or Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays. But check out the calendar bar above, occasionally there are varying dates. Please get in touch with special requests, such as Birthday decorations, or varying lengths of stays to what is available (e.g. mon-thurs). We do not usually offer one night stays however we welcome all requests and if it is something we feel we can accommodate we will.

A special thank you to our friend Alexandra Robertson of Inkwell Illustrations for creating our banner images. Alex created these before we had finished building the hut to give our future guests an idea of what they were booking, and we think she got it spot on!

The Why?

In 2019 Kirsten moved to Preston to run The Joiners Shop Bunkhouse, and lives on site with partner Ross. During Covid Kirsten decided to build an escape retreat, known as ‘the bell tent in the woods’,  which was a secluded woodland glamping experience beloved by many visitors. Fast forward to 2025 and we decided it was time to upgrade the bell tent experience to something more luxurious and year round. Ross has designed and built the entire A Frame Cabin we have named Hurkle Durkle Hut. Hurkle Durkle is an ancient Scottish Term meaning to lounge around long after it’s time to be up and about. We thought this rather fitting, Ross being a Scotsman himself combined with how relaxing this space is to enjoy.

What can you expect?

A beautiful woodland setting, birdsong all day and nature literally at your doorstep. The area is not fenced in so we ask guests to keep dogs close by. There is a firepit and a BBQ and a wood fired hot tub that more than comfortably sits 2 people. The hot tub also had LED lights and Hydro Jets to massage your weary muscles!

We have supplied everything you need to truly ‘get away from it all’, you could literally nestle down in the woods for days without leaving if that’s what you wanted to do, and you’d emergerelaxed and rejuvinated. Of course, the area around us is beautiful to explore and most people like to go out and enjoy day trips. Alnwick is only 10 minutes drive south of us, the A1 is 2 minutes away making us very accessible. The beautiful coast is a 5 to 10 miute drive east for popular destinations such as Seahouses, Embleton and Beadnell. Holy Island is a 20-30 minute drive North, another very popular tourist destination.

Inside the hut

Inside the hut there is a King Sized bed with luxury bedding, a table and chairs, a stove to keep you warm and cosy in the winter months and a kitchenette with 2 gas ring burners and an undercounter fridge/freezer. We have supplied board games, all the crockery and cooking utensils you will need to enjoy a meal as well as a toaster. We also supply a number of herbs and spices, Salt & Pepper, Cooking Oil, Tea & Coffee and some complimentary extras. You have 2 towels each and a dressing gown, there’s also a hair dryer and coat hangers in case you need to hang up any evening attire.

Outdoor Living & Privacy

On the large decking area we have sun loungers, and a table and chairs for dining alfresco. There is also a compost loo and a hot gas powered shower. And of course, the wood fired hydro jet hot tub! The area is lit by festoon lighting and we have plans for some more winter lighting installments coming soon (Oct 2025).

Although there is no fencing around the hut itself, there is a 6 ft fence on entry to give you privacy from bunkhouse guests with a lock and a key for the gate and the hut accessible via a lockbox.

We are dog friendly and we do not charge you an extra fee to bring you dog/s with you. We only ask you consider the size of the space as per how many you are bringing, and also consider that once you go through your gate you are part of the woodland expanse. Please do not let dogs run away or chase wildlife. Finally, if you cannot keep your dog off the bed please bring your own bedding or a large blanket if it’s just to cover the risk of them going on. The bedding is high quality and the woods can get very muddy!

Future Improvements

In the Autumn of 2025 we will be converting one of the buildings in the car park back into a loo/shower so that in the winter months hut users have a warm shower room to use and a flushing toilet. Unfortunately this conversion will not be complete in the summer of 2025 on opening, but from previous experience running a bell tent in this exact spot for 5 years guests love the outdoorsy shower in the summer months. Plus it is convenient for hopping out of the hot tub and into the hot shower, even in the winter months we expect this to be popular.
